Sloppy Joes

Sloppy Joes

Sloppy Joes are a classic American comfort food, featuring seasoned ground beef simmered in a tangy tomato-based sauce, served on soft hamburger buns. They’re a perfect quick and easy meal for family dinners or casual get-togethers.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon mustard (yellow or Dijon)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 68 hamburger buns

Instructions

  • Brown the Beef and Onions: Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a spatula, until browned. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 3-5 minutes. Drain any excess fat from the skillet.
  • Make the Sauce: Add the tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, salt, and pepper to the skillet. Stir well to combine.
  • Simmer: Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce heat to low and simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, allowing the flavors to meld together.
  • Serve: Spoon the Sloppy Joe mixture onto hamburger buns. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Meat: You can use ground beef, ground turkey, or even ground chicken. Lean ground beef will require less draining.
  • Onions: Yellow or white onions are commonly used, but you can also use red onions.
  • Sweetness: Adjust the amount of brown sugar to your liking. You can also use a touch of maple syrup.
  • Tang: The mustard and Worcestershire sauce add tang. You can adjust the amounts to your preference. A splash of apple cider vinegar can also add tang.
  • Spice: Add a pinch of red pepper flakes or a dash of hot sauce for a little heat.
  • Consistency: If the sauce is too thick, add a little water or beef broth. If it’s too thin, simmer for a few more minutes uncovered to allow some of the liquid to evaporate.
  • Buns: Use soft hamburger buns. Toasting them lightly can add a nice texture.
  • Toppings: Add your favorite toppings, such as shredded cheese, pickles, sliced jalapeños, or coleslaw.
  • Vegetarian Option: Substitute lentils, crumbled tempeh, or a plant-based ground meat alternative for the ground beef.
