Caprese Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Caprese Grilled Cheese Sandwich

This Caprese Grilled Cheese Sandwich is a delicious twist on a classic, combining the comfort of melted cheese with the fresh flavors of a Caprese salad. It’s a quick and easy meal that’s perfect for lunch, dinner, or a satisfying snack.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 slices of bread (rustic Italian loaf, ciabatta, or sourdough recommended)
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 4 ounces fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced
  • 1 large ripe tomato, sliced
  • 46 fresh basil leaves
  • Balsamic glaze (optional)

  • Olive oil (optional)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Ingredients: Slice the mozzarella and tomato. Wash and dry the basil leaves.
  • Assemble the Sandwich: Lightly butter one side of each slice of bread. On the unbuttered side of one slice, layer the mozzarella cheese, tomato slices, and fresh basil leaves. Drizzle with balsamic glaze (if using). Top with the other slice of bread, butter-side up.
  • Grill the Sandwich: Heat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat. Place the sandwich in the skillet and press down gently with a spatula. Cook for 3-5 minutes per side, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted and gooey. If using a panini press, preheat and cook for 5-7 minutes.

  • Serve: Remove the sandwich from the skillet and let it rest for a minute or two before slicing in half. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Bread: The type of bread you use can greatly affect the sandwich. A sturdy bread like sourdough, ciabatta, or a rustic Italian loaf will hold up well to the fillings and grilling.
  • Cheese: Fresh mozzarella is the classic choice for a Caprese sandwich. Buffalo mozzarella is even better, but regular fresh mozzarella will work fine. You could also experiment with provolone or fontina for a slightly different flavor profile.
  • Tomatoes: Use ripe, juicy tomatoes for the best flavor. Heirloom tomatoes are a great option. Slicing them thicker helps them hold up during grilling.
  • Basil: Fresh basil is essential for the classic Caprese flavor.
  • Balsamic Glaze: Balsamic glaze adds a touch of sweetness and tanginess. It’s optional but highly recommended. You can also use a balsamic reduction.
  • Olive Oil: Brushing the bread with olive oil instead of butter can create a crispier crust.
  • Pesto: Adding a layer of pesto to the sandwich can add another layer of flavor.
  • Grilled Vegetables: You can add grilled vegetables like zucchini or bell peppers for a heartier sandwich.

  • Serving Suggestions: Serve with a bowl of tomato soup, a fresh salad, or some olives and a glass of wine.
