Apple Cinnamon Crumble

Apple Cinnamon Crumble

A classic comforting dessert featuring tender baked apples beneath a buttery, cinnamon-spiced oat crumble topping. Perfect for a cozy autumn evening.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Apple Filling:

  • 68 medium apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji recommended), peeled, cored, and sliced (about 6 cups)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

For the Crumble Topping:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt (optional)
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts (pecans or walnuts, optional)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Apple Filling: In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, lemon juice, and cinnamon. Toss to coat and let stand while you prepare the crumble topping.
  • Make the Crumble Topping: In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt (if using). Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the chopped nuts (if using).
  • Assemble the Crumble: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Pour the apple filling into a 9×13 inch baking dish (or a similar sized oven-safe dish). Spread evenly. Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apples.
  • Bake: Bake for 35-45 minutes, or until the crumble is golden brown and the apples are tender. If the topping browns too quickly, cover loosely with foil.

  • Cool and Serve: Let the crumble cool slightly before serving. Serve warm, optionally with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or a drizzle of caramel sauce.

Notes

  • For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free rolled oats and a gluten-free flour blend.
  • Adjust the amount of sugar depending on the sweetness of your apples.
  • You can add other fruits like pears or berries to the apple filling.

  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently before serving.
