Optional: Chocolate chips, chopped nuts, or other mix-ins
Instructions
Combine dry ingredients: In a microwave-safe mug (at least 12 ounces), combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, and salt. Mix well with a fork to remove any lumps.
Add wet ingredients: Add vegetable oil, milk, and vanilla extract to the mug. Stir well until the batter is smooth and no dry ingredients remain at the bottom.
Add mix-ins (optional): If using chocolate chips or nuts, fold them into the batter.
Microwave: Microwave on high for 1 minute 30 seconds. Cooking times may vary depending on the wattage of your microwave, so keep an eye on the cake. If necessary, microwave in 10-second intervals until the cake is set in the center. Do not overcook.
Cool slightly and enjoy: Let the mug cake cool for a minute or two before enjoying. It will be very hot.
Notes
Use a large enough mug to prevent the cake from overflowing while cooking.
If the cake is not cooked through in the center, microwave it for a few more seconds.
Do not overcook the cake, as it will become dry.
Get creative with toppings! Whipped cream, ice cream, chocolate sauce, and fresh fruit are all delicious options.
For a richer flavor, use high-quality cocoa powder.
You can substitute other types of flour, such as almond flour or gluten-free flour, but this may affect the texture and cooking time.
This recipe is for one serving. Double or triple the recipe if you need to make more, but cook each mug cake individually.
